Father of Dieter Frenzel. Began playing hockey at the age of 13 years as a defenseman for Rastenburger SV. He participated in the German midget (Schüler) finals in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1943.
He had to escape from World War II in 1944 and relocate in Garmisch. One year later, he reunited by chance with his father and later the entire family in Donauwörth.
The family settled in Zerbst, near Magdebourg, where they got a job proposal. There he met Gertrud in 1948 and married her five years later.
While working in the traffic police, he read in an article that coach Ernst Liedtke was looking for ice hockey players in Berlin. Despite he hadn't played hockey for six years, he got into Dynamo Berlin team.
In 1952 he was sent to another Dynamo team (Weißwasser). He won four East german titles there in five years, from 1954 to 1957.
Debuted for the national team in 1951. Retired in 1965 after having scored 76 goals in 104 league games. Represented East Germany 61 times.
Later was an ice hockey coach and, mostly, Wellblechpalast rink speaker, until 1993.

Père du célèbre Dieter Frenzel, il commence le hockey sur glace en 1941 en tant que défenseur à Rastenburg, ville aujourd'hui nommée Kętrzyn et située en Pologne. Avec la sélection de Prusse orientale, il participe en 1943 aux finales du championnat d'Allemagne junior (Schüler) à Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Il fuit la Mazurie devant l'avancée de l'Armée rouge en 1944, et s'installe dans le seul autre endroit qu'il connaît, Garmisch. Il retrouve par hasard son père puis toute sa famille un an plus tard à Donauwörth.
La famille s'installe à Zerbst, près de Magdebourg, où on lui propose du travail. Il y rencontre en 1948 Gertrud, qu'il épouse cinq ans plus tard pour 66 ans de mariage.
Il est agent de circulation dans la police quand il lit un article annonçant que l'entraîneur Ernst Liedke cherche des hockeyeurs à Berlin. Même s'il a arrêté le hockey depuis six ans, il est pris dans la SG Deutsche Volkspolizei (futur Dynamo Berlin).
En 1952, il est envoyé dans l'autre équipe de la police, le Dynamo Weißwasser, et y remporte quatre titres de champion de RDA en cinq ans, de 1954 à 1957.
Débute en équipe nationale en 1951 (61 sélections) et prend sa retraite de joueur en 1965 après avoir inscrit 76 buts en 104 matches de championnat.
Devenu entraîneur mais surtout annonceur du Wellblechpalast, passant parfois tous ses week-ends derrière le micro de la patinoire jusqu'en 1993.
