His father was a native of Minnesota and his mother of North Dakota. Born in Minneapolis, MN and grew up in St.Paul, MN. He had one older brother and three younger sisters.
Attended the University of Minnesota and Mankato State, where he earned his Bachelor's degree. Enlisted in the US Army late in 1941. Served in the Army Air Corps as a B-17 pilot. Worked as a salesman and sales agent.
