Born and raised in Ulyanovsk, more than 800km (500 miles) from Moscow, a town that was Vladimir "Ilich Ulyanov" Lenin's birthplace and therefore was renamed after him. There Fedorov played for the local team Torpedo in the Soviet second league before playing in the elite league with another Torpedo, seeded in Gorki (Nizhny-Novgorod). Had a long and distinguished playing career in the Soviet league, appearing in 589 league games, scoring 189 points (104+85).
Only represented Soviet Union 38 times (4 goals) and never managed to earn a permanent spot on the blueline. Unspectacular but offensively gifted defenseman who seldom made mistakes. Intelligent on the ice.
Retired in 1985 and went on to work as a coach and advisor for the Oji team in Japan. Made a one year comeback in the Soviet league during the 1987/88 season. Continued coaching in Russia after his retirement as a player.

Yuri Fedorov y a débuté en hockey senior pour le Torpedo local, en deuxième division soviétique, avant d'être transféré vers un autre Torpedo, celui de Gorki (depuis redevenue Nijni Novgorod). Sa carrière de joueur s'étend sur vingt bonnes années et comprend 589 matches de championnat soviétique constellés de 189 points (104+85).
Cependant, Fedorov ne compte que 38 sélections (et 4 buts) pour l'URSS, sélection où il n'est jamais parvenu à se frayer une place stable. Manquait sans doute d'une étincelle malgré son apport offensif et sa faible disposition aux erreurs. Un joueur très intelligent, en somme.
Après sa retraite en 1985 (brièvement interrompue en 1987-88), il se fit conseiller pour l'équipe japonaise d'Oji. Revint ensuite entraîner en Russie.
