Already wanted to be a hockey player as a six year old because of his older brothers.
Brother Garry (b.1976) represented Great Britain as a junior and Marc (b.1972) played in the Premier Division.
Robert Dowd’s step brother Jack Davies also became a hockey player.
Played hockey in his hometown of Billingham up until he was 17 years old.
Then played one year in North America before signing with Sheffield.
A swift skater and a good playmaker. Only average in his defensive game.

Il voulait devenir hockeyeur depuis l'âge de 6 ans à cause de ses frères Marc et Garry.
Garry (né en 1976) a été international junior et Marc (né en 1972) a été gardien en Premier Division.
Son demi-frère Jack Davies est aussi devenu hockeyeur.
Il a joué au hockey dans sa ville natale Billingham jusqu'à 17 ans.
Il a ensuité passé une saison en Amérique du Nord avant de signer à Sheffield.
Patineur fluide et bon meneur de jeu, mais seulement moyen dans son jeu défensif.
