“Big Al” was a hard nosed defenseman who loved to hit.
Had an imposing size at the time and put fear into opponents at the 1959 World Championships. With his long reach he was good at poking the puck away from attacking forwards.
A team player. His swift skating made him a versatile player as he was sometimes used as a forward. As a defenseman he liked to carry the puck.
Also had a decent shot from the point. He earned a $100 bonus when he turned pro in the Detroit Red Wings chain, and earned $1800 in his first season. Won the 1950 Stanley Cup
Retired right after the 1959 World Championships. His name was mentioned with great respect in Czechoslovakia for many years.
Went on to operate the Audio Universal Hearing Aid Co. for three decades in Toronto, ON.

Il avait une taille imposante pour son époque et suscitait la peur chez les adversaires aux championnats du monde 1959. Avec son allonge, il savait enlever le palet aux attaquants.
Patineur puissant et joueur d'équipe. Son patinage rapide en a fait un joueur polyvalent qui a parfois été utilisé en attaque. En tant que défenseur, il aimait porter le palet.
Bon tir de la ligne bleue. Il a reçu une prime de $100 quand il est passé pro pour les Detroit Red Wings, et a gagné $1800 à sa première saison. Vainqueur de la Coupe Stanley 1950.
Il a pris sa retraite juste après les championnats du monde 1959. Son nom a été mentionné avec grand respect en Tchécoslovaquie pendant des années.
Il a ensuite dirigé une entreprise d'appareils auditifs pendant trois décennies à Toronto.
