His father Thomas was was born in Scotland and his mother Emma in Canada.
Offensively gifted player who during his playing career (regular season and playoffs) was the top goal scorer three times, had most assists nine times and most points six times. He first started out as a defenseman in midget and juvenile hockey. Played his junior hockey in Calgary, but left for work in May 1934 and settled down in Trail, BC.
Tried out for New York Americans (NHL) on three occasions in the mid 1930s and drew praise from manager Red Dutton. He also had pro-tryout invitations from New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings, but turned them down. Scored 646 (294+352) career points in 504 games.
Retired in 1952. Was one of the eight (out of ten) surviving members of the 1939 World Championship team that gathered in British Columbia 1978. Worked as a warehouseman in the late 1930s.
Passed away at Trail Regional Hospital. He had pancreatic cancer at the time of his death.

Indiscutable talent offensif, Cronie obtint, tout au long de sa carrière (saison régulière et playoffs compris), trois titres de meilleur buteur, neuf de meilleur passeur et six de meilleur pointeur. Paradoxalement, fit sa formation en tant que défenseur mais transita devant dès ses années de junior à Calgary, ville qu'il dut quitter en mai 1934 pour raisons professionnelles et s'installer en Colombie-Britannique.
Les New York Americans, à l'époque en NHL, l'essayèrent à trois reprises au milieu des années trente et leur entraîneur Red Dutton fut agréablement impressionné. Les New York Rangers et les Red Wings s'intéressèrent aussi au jeune homme qui ne donna pas suite. Resta sur 646 points (294+352) en 504 matches joués un peu partout, sauf en NHL.
Prit sa retraite à 37 ans. Cronie était un des huit survivants parmi les dix champions du monde 1939 à participer à une réunion d'anciens en 1978. Dans la vie civile, on sait qu'il travaillait comme manutentionnaire.
Il avait un cancer du pancréas lorsqu'il mourut à l'hôpital régional de Trail.
