Uncle of the late Craig Charron. Had cat-like reflexes. Lost only two out of 57 games for Oliver Ames High School in North Easton, MA.
His mother died from cancer and his father lost his job so he wanted to accept an offer from the Boston Bruins to help his family financially, but his father convinced him to wait before turning pro and to represent his country in the Olympic games as an homage to his late mother.
One of the heroes when USA won the Olympic Gold medal in Lake Placid 1980. Saved 36 out of 39 shots against the Soviets in the epic 4-3 win.
In his NHL debut on March 1, 1980 he helped Atlanta Flames beat Colorado Rockies 4-1. Voted as the best goaltender at the 1983 Pool B World Championships. Retired in 1984.
Went on to sell advertising for Valassis Inserts in Brockton, MA., for a few years in the late 1980s and early 90s. Later worked as a motivational speaker, marketing and sales strategist.
Inducted into the IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame.

Oncle du trop tôt disparu Craig Charron. Gardien aux réflexes félins, il ne perdit que deux des 57 matches de hockey scolaire disputés avec l'Oliver Ames High School de North Easton.
Sa mère est morte du cancer puis son père a perdu son travail de responsable de la cafétéria de l'école locale. Jim voulait alors accepter une offre de contrat des Bruins de Boston pour l'aider financièrement, mais son père lui dit d'attendre avant de passer pro et d'aller plutôt aux Jeux Olympiques pour son pays en hommage à sa mère.
Il devint un des grands héros du Miracle en sauvant notamment 36 tirs sur 39 lors de la victoire 4-3 sur l'URSS.
Fit ses débuts en NHL juste après, le 1er mars 1980, lors de la victoire 4-1 d'une franchise défunte, les Atlanta Flames (devenue Calgary Flames), sur les Colorado Rockies, autre franchise disparue. En 1983, il recevra le titre de meilleur gardien des Mondiaux B 1983 où les États-Unis étaient descendus. Il prit sa retraite l'année suivante, à seulement 27 ans.
Devint commercial pour l'entreprise Valassis Inserts dans son État natal du Massachusetts, jusqu'au début des années 1990.
Il se fit ensuite conférencier en motivation, doublé d'un conseiller stratégique en marketing et vente.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey mondial.
30 parties de saison régulière en NHL avec 85,7% d'arrêts et une moyenne de 3,77 buts encaissés par match.
