His family originated from Smilde near Assen, Nertherlands. They were of Jewish origin and later settled down in Amsterdam.
He was one of the best Dutch players who played for the AYHC Amsterdam and Amsterdam Blue Six teams during his career. Learned a lot by playing alongside North American veterans in the late 1930s. They showed him all the tricks and he improved a lot.
Studied at the State University of Leiden during WW II. While a student he joined the Dutch resistance and was captured by the Germans. He was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp, where he died, a month before his 30th birthday.

Né à La Haye dans une famile juive dont les racines se situent à Smilde, près d'Assen dans la Drenthe (nord des Pays-Bas). S'installa finalement à Amsterdam.
Là-bas, il devint un des meilleurs hockeyeurs néerlandais, s'alignant pour l'AYHC Amsterdam et l'Amsterdam Blue Six. Progressa énormément au contact des vétérans nord-américains qui vinrent jouer aux Pays-Bas à la fin des années 1930.
Étudiant à Leiden quand débuta la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il se joignit à la résistance et fut capturé par les Allemands, qui l'envoyèrent au camp de concentration de Buchenwald. Le jeune Thijs n'y survécut point.
