Cleary, Robert Barry

Position : C

21-04-1936 Cambridge, MA, USA
16-19-2015 Hyannis, MA, USA

Dangerous player in the offensive zone. Good leadership qualities. Educated at Shady Hill School and Belmont Hill School where he won three consecutive Massachusetts private school titles before going to Harvard. While at Harvard he captained both the varsity ice hockey and baseball teams. During his collegiate hockey career, he led the NCAA in scoring in both his 1957 and 1958 seasons, setting a career scoring record at Harvard.
He was a Hearst All Star, a premier invitational tournament for the nation's top school-aged amateur baseball players, and he played three seasons in the well-known Cape Cod Baseball League. Two time NCAA All-American.
He was also two-time recipient of the Walter Brown Award, given annually to the top collegiate hockey player in Greater Boston. He and his brother stirred up some controversy when they joined the US Olympic team in 1960. The other teammates didn’t like the fact that two players had to be dropped from the squad to make room for the Cleary brothers just weeks prior to the tournament. They eventually mellowed and accepted the Clearys when they saw their skills.
Worked in the insurance business as a top agent for The New England Life Insurance Company for more than 50 years. Became one of the few to win the Flagship award for top life insurance sales in multiple years. Passed away at the Cape Cod Hospital.
Inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.
