Born in Toronto in 1891. His mother came to Canada from England as a teenager, and his father, was a second generation Canadian also from England. George Clarkson graduated in engineering from the University of Toronto where also played ice hockey in 1912/13, playing against some of the top amateur players in Canada.
He came to England and studied chemistry at University of Leeds, meeting his future wife there. He got to play at the 1914 LIHG tournament, and was formidable, dazzling the crowd with his stickhandling technique and flawless skating. Also served as a hockey referee.
In 1924 he served as the playing coach for Great Britain at the 1924 Olympics. Worked for his wife’s father in the steel industry in the north of England and Scotland. In the 1920s he moved to London and had seven children.
While on business in Vienna in 1938 shortly after the Anschluß he saw first-hand how the Nazis treated the Jews. As his wife was Jewish, he decided to bring the family back to Canada in early August 1939 on the last peacetime voyage of the Empress of Britain.
Later owned a printing company (Technical Charts Inc.) in Buffalo. The company changed its name to Graphic Controls Corporation in 1957 and became a publicly held corporation in 1965. He moved back to England in later years and died in London.
He is often confused with his Toronto born cousin Guy Edward Elliott (b.1888).

Né à Toronto en 1891 car sa mère, une Anglaise, avait rejoint le dominion durant son adolescence. Son père en revanche descendait de colons anglais sur deux générations.
George entreprit des études d'ingénierie à l'Université de Toronto et se mit au hockey en 1912, ce qui lui permit d'affronter parmi les meilleurs joueurs amateurs canadiens.
Gagna l'île de ses aïeux pour étudier la chimie à l'Université de Leeds, où il rencontra sa future épouse. Prit part au tournoi 1914 de la LIHG où il éblouit l'assistance par son maniement de la crosse et son excellent patinage. Fut également arbitre.
Entraîneur-joueur de l'équipe britannique lors des JO 1924. A côté de cela, il était employé par son beau-père, industriel de l'acier dans le nord de l'Angleterre et en Écosse. Dans les années 1920 cependant, Clarkson s'installa à Londres où lui et son épouse eurent sept enfants.
Tandis qu'il séjournait à Vienne en 1938 pour raisons professionnelles, donc peu après l'Anschluß, il put constater ce que préparaient les Nazis pour les Juifs d'Europe. Début août 1939, il embarqua pour le Canada, profitant du tout dernier voyage là-bas de la Reine d'Angleterre avant six ans d'horreur.
Il acquit une imprimerie à Buffalo, aux États-Unis (Technical Charts Inc.). L'entreprise fut rebaptisée Graphic Controls Corporation en 1957 et devint une SA huit ans plus tard. Clarkson rentra alors en Angleterre et s'éteignit à Londres.
Ne pas confondre George Clarkson avec son cousin Guy Edward Elliott, lui aussi natif de Toronto mais en 1888.
