Father of Jake Chelios.
Son of Greek parents. Family name originally Tselios. Moved with his family to San Diego, CA in 1977 and attended Mira Mesa Senior High School.
Grew up rooting for the Chicago Blackhawks and his favorite player was Bobby Hull.
One of the toughest defensemen to beat one-on-one throughout his career. Always played a smart game in the defensive zone and was terrific in transition.
Also a nasty individual to line up against. No longer supplied his club with quality offensive production or huge amounts of ice time in the second half of his lengthy career that ended in 2010.
All in all he played an incredible 2304 games, scoring 1419 (295+1124) career points and picking up 3884 penalty minutes. Tied for the best plus/minus rating [+6] at the 2002 Olympics.
At the 2006 Olympics he set a record among the hockey players by going 22 years between his first and last Olympics. Set numerous NHL records, amongst them being the oldest NHL defenseman and having played the most NHL games by a US born player. An interesting tidbit is that he was the first right shooting defenseman to win the Norris Trophy and the first US born player.

Père de Jake Chelios.
De son vrai nom Christos Konstantinos Tselios, donc fils d'immigrés grecs aux États-Unis. Bien que né à Chicago, où il connaîtra de grands succès une fois adulte, il vécut une partie de sa jeunesse à San Diego, en Californie, où il fréquenta la Mira Mesa Senior High School.
Grand fan dès l'enfance des Chicago Blackhawks, son joueur préféré se nommait bien sûr Bobby Hull.
Chelios, malgré une stature classique (1,82m, 87kg), en imposait en un-contre-un, au point d'être quasiment imbattable voire méchant dans cette situation de jeu. Très intelligent dans sa zone, excellent pour la transition entre jeu défensif et offensif.
Perdit progressivement ses qualités d'attaquant et d'endurance à mesure qu'il avançait dans sa longue carrière, qui ne prit fin qu'en 2010. Il effectua encore une pige en NHL à 48 ans, ce qui n'ajouta pas à sa gloire.
Mais à son total de matches officiels, oui. Il en affiche 2304, avec 1419 points (295+1124) au passage et tout de même 3884 minutes de pénalité (presque trois jours entiers). Meilleur +/- des JO 2002 avec +6.
En 2006, il établit un record sans doute éternel, celui d'un hiatus de 22 ans entre sa première (en 1984) et sa dernière participation au rendez-vous olympique. Détient plein d'autres records en NHL : défenseur le plus âgé, nombre de matches pour un citoyen des États-Unis... Il fut aussi le premier défenseur tirant de la droite et le premier Américain à recevoir le Trophée Norris.
Une partie de sa fortune fut réinvestie dans des restaurants à Chicago et Detroit.
