One of the pioneers of European ice hockey. The 5' 8½" Cawthra was a good allround sportsman who excelled in many sports. Aside from being one of the pioneers of ice hockey with a puck in Europe, he also was a good lacrosse player, rugby player and track and field athlete.
Educated at the Upper Canada College in Toronto and shortly after arriving to England in 1894 he showed his English fellow students at Clare College, Cambridge how the game was played in Canada.
During his five year stint in Cambridge where he earned his Business Administration degree he captained the lacrosse team in 1900. Also captained the Cambridge speed-skating team, winning the Varsity races against Oxford. As a runner he registered some very fine results, ranging from 100 yards to three miles. In ice hockey he captained Cambridge University between 1900 and 1902.
Moved back to Toronto where he developed an interest in automobiles. Also lived in Ottawa. There he was noted as one of the finest marathon runners in the city. Cawthra also liked hunting and fishing.
In 1912 he returned to England and played for Princes Ice Hockey Club London. Represented Canada in that years LIHG congress. Captain in the Canadian Army during the WWI. Later in the 1920s he worked in the stationery business at Shawinigan Falls, QC.
Hall of Fame worthy pioneer of European ice hockey.
