Played for Kölner EC between 1936 and 1950 before switching to Preussen Krefeld 1951 to 1955, where he enjoyed some successful years. He finished his playing career back with Kölner EC.
In 1941 he volunteered to the Marine for WW II. Twice he narrowly escaped death.
The first time his boat struck a mine and he drifted in the cold North Sea for 12 hours before being rescued. Only his good physical condition and swimming abilities saved his life.
The second time he was badly injured by shell splinter and managed to get onto a reef.
He was eventually saved by French partisans who took him to a nunnery where he was well taken care of. After that he was handed over to the Americans.
In 1946 he managed to escape from captivity in Le Havre and returned to Köln (Cologne).
Both his town and family business was in ruins (Nova Lux Tages-Spar-Licht Gesellschaft Brandenburg &Co.), but he successfully rebuilt it with his father.
Scored 85 goals in 122 league games. Became a hockey coach.
Represented West Germany nine times. Passed away at a Köln hospital.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.
Some sources have a wrong birth date and place for him (October 1, 1924 in Krefeld).

Il a joué au Kölner EC entre 1936 et 1950 avant d'évoluer pour le Preussen Krefeld de 1951 à 1955, où il connut des années de succès. Il termina sa carrière de joueur en retournant au Kölner EC.
En 1941 il se porta volontaire pour intégrer la Marine en pleine Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il a échappé deux fois de peu à la mort.
La première fois, son bateau a frappé une mine et il dériva 12 heures dans les eaux froides de la Mer du Nord avant d'être secouru. Sa bonne condition physique et ses habiletés de nageur lui sauvèrent la vie.
La seconde fois il fut gravement blessé par un éclat d'obus et réussit à atteindre un récif.
Il fut finalement sauvé par des résistants français qui l'emmenèrent dans un couvent où il fut bien traité. Il fut ensuite remis aux Américains.
En 1946 il réussit à s'échapper de captivité au Havre et retourna à Köln (Cologne).
Sa ville était en ruines comme son entreprise familiale (Nova Lux Tages-Spar-Licht Gesellschaft Brandenburg &Co.), mais il réussit à le reconstruire avec son père.
Il a marqué 85 buts en 122 matchs de championnat. Il est devenu entraîneur de hockey.
Neuf sélections pour l'Allemagne de l'ouest. Il est décédé à l'hôpital de Cologne.
Intronisé au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
Certaines sources lui attribuent une date et un lieu de naissance erronés (1er octobre 1924 à Krefeld).
