He ventured into golf at the age of 13 in Mount Clemens, MI.
The Providence hockey coach asked Mike to accept a golf scholarship in order to open up a hockey scholarship for an additional recruit.
The Providence golf coach was unaware of this deal and once he found out he challenged Mike to play a round against the best university golfer at the Providence College in order to prove himself. Mike outshot that best golfer, 74-76 and got the scholarship. So he doubled playing both hockey and golf in Providence.
Formed a dangerous duo in College with Rob Gaudreau. Once in College he recorded points in 19 straight games.
Drafted in the NHL by Washington Capitals but never played in any NHL games and only attended a couple of training camps.
Coached by longtime NHL coach Barry Trotz in Baltimore (AHL).
Fine playmaker with good hand skills and vision.
Scored 480 (144+336) career points in 395 games. Retired in 1997.

L'entraîneur de hockey de l'Université de Providence a demandé à Mike d'accepter une bourse d'études pour le golf, de manière à laisser la place à une bourse d'études supplémentaire pour le hockey.
L'entraîneur de golf n'était pas au courant de cet accord. Une fois qu'il l'a su, il a demandé à Mike d'affronter le meilleur golfeur de l'université de Providence afin de tester son niveau. Mike domina la meilleur golfeur, 74-76, et obtint la bourse. Il joua donc à la fois au hockey et au golf à Providence.
Il formait à l'Université un duo dangereux avec Rob Gaudreau. Il y a notamment inscrit des points lors de 19 matchs de série.
Drafté NHL par les Capitals de Washington, il n'a jamais joué la moindre rencontre dans la grande ligue, et n'a participé qu'à des camps d'entraînement.
Il a longtemps été coaché par le légendaire coach NHL Barry Trotz à Baltimore (AHL).
Bon créateur de jeu avec de bonnes mains et une bonne vision.
Il a inscrit 480 points (144+336) en 395 matchs dans sa carrière. Retraité en 1997.
