He was a calm goaltender with great presence.
Born in Halifax where he grew up until moving out west to Vancouver, BC at the age of eleven when his father (a lawyer) got a job there.
Bright student who attended high school in Vancouver. Undergraduate studies at Queen’s University, Kingston, 1903-1907.
Teached at McGill University College of Vancouver (lecturer in Greek 1908-1910).
Part of his graduate work at Harvard in 1911 (received a Ph.d.).
Went to Europe and studied in Rome, Grenoble and Berlin.
Tended goal for Berliner SC while studying there, with appearences in Brussels and Oxford.
History professor at University of Michigan (Sep.1914).
During WW I, this mild-mannered man entered the Naval service and earned a great deal of respect with his diplomacy and judicious consideration.
Helped organize the 7th and 8th divisions of the Michigan Naval Militia.
Called into active service in April 1917 at Ann Arbor, MI. Went to the Naval station at Great Lakes in late May.
Granted leave of absence in June and returned to Ann Arbor to resume his University work.
Put in charge of instruction at the Naval unit (Sep.1918).
Faculty member at the University of Michigan between 1914-1958.
Later regarded as one of the foremost world experts in ancient history.
Wrote several books in that subject and was a frequent guest speaker at seminars all over the globe.
Buried at Lindenwood Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana.

Né à Halifax mais il a grandi à l'ouest de Vancouver, BC là où son père qui était avocat obtint un poste quand Arthur avait onze ans.
Étudiant brillant à Vancouver. Il a poursuivi des études supérieures à l'université Queen’s, Kingston, de 1903 à 1907.
Il a enseigné au McGill University College de Vancouver (conférencier en grec de 1908 à 1910).
Une partie de ses études se fit à Harvard en 1911 (il reçut un doctorat). Il partit ensuite en Europe étudier à Rome, Grenoble et Berlin.
Il garda les cages du Berliner SC quand il étudia là-bas, avec des apparitions à Bruxelles et Oxford.
Professeur d'histoire à l'université du Michigan (septembre 1914).
Durant la Première Guerre mondiale, cet homme aux bonnes manières entra dans la Marine où il obtint un grand respect par sa diplomatie et ses judicieuses considérations.
Il oeuvra à organiser les 7e et 8e divisions de la milice navale du Michigan Naval Militia.
Appelé dans les services actifs en avril 1917 à Ann Arbor, puis dans le centre de commandement de Great Lakes fin mai.
Il obtint une permission en juin et retourna à Ann Arbor pour terminer son travail universitaire.
Il géra ensuite les instructions de l'unité navale (septembre 1918).
Professeur émerite de l'université du Michigan entre 1914 et 1958.
Plus tard il fut considéré comme l'un des plus grands experts au monde sur l'histoire antique.
Il écrivit plusieurs livres à ce sujet et fut fréquemment conférencier lors de séminaires partout dans le monde.
Enterré au cimetière Lindenwood à Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana.
