Born in East Hamilton and later grew up in the Burlington area.
Played multiple sports as a youngster.
Began training in his garage at 13 years of age, and soon devoted his time to fitness and training. Offered numerous US University hockey scholarships.
Attended several NHL training camps with Chicago Blackhawks.
Eventually moved to Italy where he played from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.
During the mandatory physical assessments that took place in Rome before the World Championship and Olympic tournaments, it was reported that John was the most physically fit member on the team. His test results placed him among the worlds most elite level athletes, at a fitness level equivalent to that of the Italian Cycling team.
He maintained a rigorous training schedule throughout his career.
He remained injury free very much thanks to his awesome physical condition.
Scored 682 (249+433) career points in 660 games.
After his retirement as a player in 1991 he became a personal trainer.

Né à East Hamilton et a grandi plus tard dans la région de Burlington.
Il a pratiqué de nombreux sports dans sa jeunesse.
Il a commencé à s'entraîner dans son garage à 13 ans, et très vite il passa son temps au fitness et à l'entraînement. Il a reçu de nombreuses bourses pour jouer au hockey dans des universités américaines.
Il a participé à plusieurs camps d'entraînement NHL avec les Chicago Blackhawks.
Il partit finalement pour l'Italie où il joua de la fin des années 1970 jusqu'aux débuts des années 1990.
Durant les tests physiques qui se tenaient à Rome avant les championnats du monde et les tournois olympiques, il fut remarqué que John réalisait les meilleures performances physiques de son équipe. Ses résultats aux tests d'effort le plaçaient au niveau des plus grands athlètes mondiaux, à un niveau équivalent à celui des cyclistes de la sélection italienne.
Il a maintenu un plan d'entraînement rigoureux tout au long de sa carrière.
Il évita les blessures grâce à son incroyable condition physique.
Il a inscrit 682 points (249+433) en carrière en 660 matchs.
Après sa carrière de joueur en 1991 il devint coach personnel.
