Played as a defenseman late in his career.
Was an aircraft apprentice in WW II and was killed during the first day Belgium was involved in the war. The army base was situated in Goetsenhoven (Gossoncourt) near Tienen (Tirlemont), when it was bombed that first day.
Barbanson was killed when he tried to estinguish a fire in one of the hangars.
Was the vice president of the Brussels IHC club at the time of his death, a position he had held since 1936.
In the 1940s, the ”Challenge Jean Barbanson” ice hockey tournament was played in his honour.

Il joua aussi défenseur à la fin de sa carrière.
Il était apprenti dans l'aviation durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et il fut tué le premier jour où la Belgique fut impliquée dans la guerre. La base de l'armée était située à Goetsenhoven (Gossoncourt) près de Tienen (Tirlemont), quand elle fut bombardée.
Barbanson fut tué en essayant d'éteindre un feu qui avait pris dans l'un des hangars.
Il était vice président du club de Brussels IHC au moment de sa mort, une position qu'il occupait depuis 1936.
Dans les années 1940, le tournoi de hockey sur glace ”Challenge Jean Barbanson” fut joué en son honneur.
