Sergei Babinov

Babinov, Sergey Panteleimonovich

Position : D

11-07-1955 Chelyabinsk, URS (RUS)

Youth team / club formateur : Traktor Chelyabinsk

Somewhat of a darkhorse on defense. His father worked at the local metal factory in Chelyabinsk. The young Babinov soon played his junior hockey for the talented Traktor Chelyabinsk team.
He actually started out as a center before switching to defense.
Soon Boris Kulagin, the famous coach managed to lure the young Babinov over to Moscow and Krylia Sovietov (Soviet Wings), thus opening the doors for a place on the national team.
He was seen as a mobile defenseman with a good shot from the point.
Great balance on his skates and had a bit of a mean streak.
Tactically good but not a finesse player. Played 452 league games, scoring 119 points (39+80).
He was part of the golden era of Soviet hockey and won many titles with the national team and CSKA Moscow. Represented Soviet Union 162 times (18 goals).
Retired before his 31st birthday in 1986. Played one year in France (Brest) nine years later.
After his playing career he served as chief of the department of physical training in one of the military academies. He then went on to work as the director of CSKA Moscow’s youth hockey school. Inducted into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame.
