He was born in Scotland but moved to England at an early age with his parents and studied in London. His father (Thomas Forrester Agar) was a native of Belfast, Ireland and his mother (Clara Fernihaugh Agar) of Bolton, England. He also had a younger brother and sister.
His brother eventually moved to Argentina and passed away there in 1941.
When Matthew Agar passed away, he left more than £ 67.000 to his surviving wife and daughter (That is about US $1,5 million in relative value today).

Né en Écosse, a suivi ses parents en Angleterre pendant ses jeunes années et suivi ses études à Londres. Son père, Thomas F. Agar, était originaire de Belfast (Ulster) et sa mère, Clara F. Agar, de Bolton, près de Manchester.
Agar a remporté le championnat LIHG en 1914 mais a bénéficié d'une bonne défense et était considéré comme le gardien le plus faible du tournoi.
Matthew Agar avait une sœur et un petit frère qui s'expatria en Argentine et y mourut en 1941.
À son décès relativement précoce (66 ans), Matthew, qui avait fait fortune, légua plus de 67.000 livres à sa veuve et à sa fille, ce qui correspond à 1,5 million de dollars actuels.
