Acton, Benjamin Maxwell

Position : LW

12-07-1927 Footscray, AUS
10-07-2020 Queensland, AUS

Born at Footscray hospital in Victoria. Educated at ex-Geelong Rd State School and Footscray Technical College. He was named Benjamin after his grandfather, who had emigrated from Great Britain in 1853. He started field hockey at 14 and began playing ice hockey in 1946 at the age of 19.
He played with the VIHA Wildcats IHC. In 1954 he transferred to VIHA Monarchs.
Was an extremely fair and honest player who only collected 7 minor penalties in 11 seasons. Weighed 67 kg (150 lbs). As a player he was also naturally ambidextrous.
His mentor and teammate, Bud McEachern taught him skills that made better use of this ability. Represented Australia in field hockey in the early 1950s, a sport he had started to play at the age of 14. In 1960 he was nominated as a captain both of the Olympic field hockey team to compete in Rome and the ice hockey team in Squaw Valley.
He could only afford to participate in one event and chose ice hockey, his first love. So he captained the Australian Olympic ice hockey team in 1960.
Was invited to the 1964 Olympic qualification but declined because of business commitments. Also an excellent football player in his younger days.
Married to Anita Johnson who represented New Zealand in Alpine Skiing at the 1952 Winter Olympics. Carried the Olympic torch at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.
Was a plumber by trade just like his father and grandfather before him. He donated his body to the Griffith University for student study.
