His grandfather, a painting master was from Norway and was born in Kristiania (today Oslo).
Börje had one brother. He was a steady player and a longtime member of Karlbergs BK.
He had a fine World Championship tournament in 1935 when he played alongside legendary Swedish sniper Gustaf "Lulle" Johansson. They both had good chemistry with each other, Johansson scoring the goals and Abelsted setting him up.
During WW II he was a member of Swedish Socialist Coalition, or SSS (Svensk Socialistisk Samling), a political Nazi party.
Represented Sweden 10 times.

Petit-fils d'un peintre norvégien très réputé qui vécut à Christiania, l'actuelle Oslo, Börje Abelsted avait un frère.
Joueur régulier et fiable, il resta fidèle au Karlbergs BK.
Figure marquante des championnats du monde 1935 durant lesquels il fut aligné au côté du légendaire buteur Gustaf "Lulle" Johansson. Leur entente était parfaite : Abelsted assistait et Johansson marquait.
Membre pendant la Seconde guerre mondiale du Svensk Socialistisk Samling (SSS), ou coalition socialiste suédoise, un parti nazi.
