01-08-1964 Sault Ste. Marie, MI, USA

His father was a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana. This hard-hitting defenseman used every ounce of his 100+ kg (225 lbs) in his days, bruising many players along the way.
Began playing hockey late at the age of 16 and never was a particularly good skater.
Carried the American flag at the 1924 Winter Olympics.
Generally regarded as the first US born player to become a regular NHL-player. Was part Chippewa indian.
Paired on defense with legendary Ching Johnson to form one of the toughest defensive tandems in NHL-history. Won two Stanley Cups (one with the Rangers, the other with the Blackhawks) and was one of the original inductees into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.
Worked as a clerk during the summers. Returned to Sault Ste. Marie after retirement, coaching hockey and operating a tourist hotel (Taffy’s Lodge) and an auto court.
The 4,000 seat Taffy Abel Arena in his hometown and on the campus of Lake Superior State University is named after him.
Earned his nickname for eating Taffy Candy.
